I don't currently read Digital Camera magazine - can I still enter?
Yes, of course. Digital Camera magazine will be covering the competition every month until it closes and providing valuable information and inspiration where needed! Take advantage of our special Photographer of the Year offer subscription offer.
Does it cost anything to enter the competition?
No! It's free to enter the competition.
Can I enter all the categories?
Absolutely. You can enter up to five images in each category if you wish, but note that if more than the allocated number of images are entered into a category, you will be ineligible for the short-list of the category. All the categories are open for entries from the start of the competition.
Why can I only enter up to five photographs in a category?
To keep this a fair competition and ensure we get a broad range of entries.
Do you accept film images that I've had scanned?
The focus of this competition is digital photography, so we're only accepting images taken with a digital camera this year.
Can I send my photos in on CD?
No. This competition is global and so is web-based in order to keep it fair to Digital Camera magazine readers around the world.
One of my photos has been printed in Digital Camera magazine, can I enter it in the competition?
No. A photo that has previously been printed in Digital Camera magazine or any other photographic magazine is not eligible for entry.
One of my photos has won a prize in another competition, can I enter it in Photographer of the Year?
No. A picture that has won a prize in a major national or international competition (one receiving more than 500 images) is not eligible for entry.
What if I enter a photo the day before deadline - it won't be able to pick up very many votes, will it?
When a category closes, a shortlist for each category is created from all entries submitted. While entries supplied a day before the closing date might miss out on votes and comments, they could still be selected for the shortlist.
Can I track how my image is doing?
Yes, by logging onto the Photographer of the Year site and clicking on the My Portfolio link at the top right.
Once I've uploaded my photos into the competition, how long will it take until they appear on the website?
Your photos should be uploaded within 10 minutes of submission.
Can I vote for my own image?
Yes.
Can I vote for as many photographs as I want?
Yes, but only once per photo.
How much image editing do you allow?
We recognize that digital images need varying degrees of enhancement to look their best. As specified in the Rules, you should use image enhancement and digital darkroom techniques to optimise an entry into the competition, such as touching up a portrait, building a panorama or creating an HDR image from multiple exposures. Adding or removing significant elements of a composition is discouraged in all but the Creative Vision category. Where appropriate, original files may be requested if a photograph reaches the shortlist of photographs selected by the independent panel of judges.
How big should my photographs be?
Your photos should not exceed the maximum size of 2MB, in JPEG format - please note that your POTY portfolio will only allow a maximum of 100MB capacity. We want to know as much about your photo as possible when you enter so please ensure you fill in your photo name, description (what we're looking at and how you got the shot), and camera details in the information boxes during submission.
Do I keep the copyright of my images?
Yes, of course. Please make sure you read the Rules to understand how your images will be reproduced.
Where can I find the rules?
You can read the rules here. By entering the competition, you agree to be bound by the rules, and also Future's terms and conditions of website use and its privacy policy.
